Laguna Beach water polo player Aria Fischer and Santa Margarita swimmer Grant Shoults are finishing the summer aquatics season as junior world champions.
Fischer, a junior, led the U.S. women’s water polo team to the gold Sunday at the FINA Junior World Championships in Greece. Fischer scored four goals as Team USA defeated Spain, 13-10, in the championship match.
The U.S. team also included former All-County players Emily Loughlin (Santa Margarita/Cal), Stephanie Mutafyan (Los Alamitos/Cal) and Mackenzie Barr (Mater Dei/UCLA). Former Rosary standout Natalie Benson, recently inducted into the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame, was an assistant coach on the squad.
Shoults, a senior bound for Stanford and The Register’s reigning male swimmer of the year, captured the 400-meter freestyle at FINA Junior Championships in Singapore on Tuesday with a lifetime-best time of 3 minutes, 48.91 seconds.
