Johnson, a Mater Dei senior who is widely considered to be the top high school boys basketball prospect in California, will announce his college choice on an ESPNU national telecast Friday. The telecast begins at 1 p.m.
Last month he stated that he would not decide in time for the early letter-of-intent signing period that began Wednesday.
Johnson has narrowed his candidates to Arizona, Kentucky and USC. He has made official recruiting visits to all three.
Johnson is a 6-foot-6 guard who can play multiple positions, and will play plenty at point guard this coming season. He was the Register’s county player of the year last season.
This early signing period is for several sports including baseball, basketball, softball, swimming, volleyball and others. The signing period concludes Nov. 20.
The regular signing period for these sports begins in April. The signing period for football begins Feb. 5.
