Irvine's 7-3 Pacific Coast League victory over Northwood Friday night was critical in terms of the playoff race.

But it also kept the Vaqueros in the hunt to win the Dennis Toohey Fence Post Trophy, which goes to the football team in Irvine with the best record against other city teams.

Irvine and Woodbridge are both 2-0 against city rivals while Northwood is 1-1.

Irvine Coach Erik Terry said his players weren't thinking too much about extending their winning streak over Northwood to five games Friday.

"The city championship is our goal," Terry said. "A league championship is right behind that so we knew how big this game was in terms of the city. That's what we preach. We try not to talk about any of the other history or anything like that."

Irvine has won the Fence Post the last two years (previous winners).

Irvine (3-4-1, 2-1) hosts Beckman Thursday night and finishes the regular season on Nov. 12 against Woodbridge.
