Football recruiting: Mater Dei's Hunt commits to Fresno St.

Mater Dei senior football player Todd Hunt (6-2.5, 247), at left on top, has committed to Fresno State, Monarchs coach Bruce Rollinson confirmed Tuesday night.

Rollinson said the Bulldogs want Hunt to play defensive end.

The coach has been high on Hunt's potential but he didn't sign in February. Fresno State visited Mater Dei in May and Rollinson again mentioned Hunt. As it turned out, the Bulldogs not only became interested, they had a scholarship from 2011 to offer.

"He has accepted the offer," Rollinson said. "I believe he slipped through the cracks (in February). ... He will be a force at Fresno State."

Hunt was a transfer from Connecticut who won a CIF state appeal to gain his athletic eligibility at Mater Dei.

And even after not signing in February, he continued to train hard and work in the classroom, Rollinson said. He is an academic qualifier at Fresno State.

Yes, sounds like a hungry player who try to make the most of the chance he has earned.

As for the June timetable, Hunt's story shows how college programs sometimes have scholarship openings after signing day -- for various reasons. Grades. Red-shirts etc.

Interestingly, Rollinson said senior linebacker Joseph Schmidt -- a preferred walk-on headed to Notre Dame -- was recently offered by Arizona. Schmidt (6-2, 222) is still headed to South Bend.

Yes, recruiting never really ends. And if a good player has the grades, he is probably always on the board.
