Ayles honored as state's Division III athlete of the year

Babcock, Steffien, Barkley among the O.C athletes on CalHiSports All-State teams.

Orange Lutheran's Blake Ayles, a standout in football and track and field, was selected as the state's Division III Athlete of the Year by CalHiSports.

Ayles, also selected The Register's top boys athlete in Orange County for 2007-08, had 45 receptions for 697 yards and eight touchdowns for the Lancers. Later in the year, he finished second at the state meet in the discus. 

Sunny Hills golfer Kristen Park, the No. 2 ranked girls' junior golfer in the nation, was selected as the state's freshman of the year. She helped Sunny Hills' boys golf team win a state title. 

Also picking up honors:

St. Margaret's Hunter Steffien (football, basketball and lacrosse): selected to All-State Division IV team.

Saddleback Valley Christian's Brendan Chambers (football, basketball, baseball: selected to All-State Division V team.   

Woodbridge's Christine Babcock (cross country and track): selected to All-State Division II team.

Mater Dei's Matt Barkley (football): selected to Junior All-State team.

Mater Dei's Alex Wherry (water polo): selected to Sophomore All-State team.

JSerra's Harrison Steed (track): selected to Sophomore All-State team.

Fountain Valley's Cynthia Fascella (swimming): selected to Sophomore All-State team.

Brea Olinda's Justine Hartman (basketball): selected to Freshman All-State team.

Mater Dei's Melanie Klaren (Mater Dei swimming): selected to Freshman All-State team.
