Coaches comment on CIF-SS ruling

OCVarsity.com
Here is what some county coaches had to say Thursday about the CIF-SS eliminating the association rule:

John Weber, Cypress baseball
"I was hoping that proposal would go through. At the beginning of the year (September) we're not going to do anything different that what we normally do, which is just lift weights five days a week. But when we get into November and December and January, that’s where it’s going to really help. You start spending more time with your players, but maybe you go up to only two hours a day. I hope this is not abused. I think some guys might start two hour practices from day one. We won’t, because that would just burn ourselves out and the kids out.

"I would coach fall ball.

"This is how stupid that rule was: I could coach your players and you could coach my players, but I couldn’t coach mine and you couldn’t coach yours. So you’d hire a coach or have a dad do it."

Jerry DeBusk, Santa Margarita boys basketball
"I’ll have to sit down and see how the rule is written, and what the big difference are and apply those to the program, although I’m not sure what those things are going to be."

Russ May, Los Alamitos boys basketball
"I think we’ll probably see more high school teams in spring and fall leagues. Now, I can actually be on the sidelines coaching my team.

Some programs might start practicing longer hours throughout the year, which is not a good thing. No. 1, that’s overkill and No. 2 that’s going to make it harder for kids to play other sports. And what about off-campus coaches, the walk on guys. What happens when these guys, who have other jobs, say the team has to practice from 7 to 9 at night? What happens to the kids’ school work then?

I’m glad they eliminated the rule, but there have to be some limits, like maybe allowing only five additional after-school hours a week, some sort of time restrictions."

May thinks the elimination of the association rule might strengthen the larger private school program: "They have the resources to raise money to hire and pay for coaches to work with these teams."
