Rancho Alamitos players celebrate after their victory over La Quinta.

OCVarsity Voice: Controversy not the only thing happening

OCVarsity.com

We have been inundated with a lot of controversy in our world of high school sports in the recent days.

The Orange Lutheran transfers.

The public-private school split debate.

The Corona del Mar coaching saga.

We all have our opinions.

This space will focus on the good. This will now be known as the "What’s good in OC high school sports" column. Here goes:

Jerime Anderson vs. Klay Thompson
The two best boys basketball players from the past season will hopefully guard each other at the OC All-Star Game on Saturday. They’re making their final organized appearance on a basketball court in the county. Go and thank them for their work over the past years.

La Quinta baseball streak ends
The Aztecs had their consecutive streak of league victories snapped at 45 Tuesday. (The Aztec faithful might not consider that good). However, that streak is impressive in any league. I once played on a baseball team that failed to win a game all season.

Rancho Alamitos did it
The Vaqueros snapped La Quinta’s streak with only their second victory over the Aztecs since 1977! Yes, 1977! I was only 1 then.

Calvary Chapel volleyball upsets No. 5 Laguna Beach
When I first heard about this result from new boys volleyball guru Adam Maya, I thought it was a mistake. But it is true. The Eagles rallied after losing two of the first three games to defeat the Breakers. I have to believe that this is Laguna Beach’s first loss since it moved to the Orange League. I still can’t believe it.

Lacrosse games starting at 7:30 p.m.
Not a good idea.

Check back next week for more of “What’s good in OC high school sports.”

Peace.
