UCLA tries to connect with Mater Dei recruits
UCLA and Mater Dei haven't united to make much recruiting news together in recent years.
But over the weekend, they at least made up for some lost time.
The Bruins hosted All-County wide receiver Robbie Boyer (6-foot-1, 175 pounds) on an official recruiting trip.
And on Saturday, new coach Rick Neuheisel met one-on-one with Mater Dei quarterback Matt Barkley (6-4, 225), the top-ranked recruit in nation for 2009 by rivals.com.
The Register's offensive player of the year attended the USC-UCLA men's basketball game at Pauley Pavilion and also talked with Neuheisel.
"It was casual," Barkley's father, Les, said of the meeting.
Boyer also had a home visit last week with San Diego State, his father, Rob, said.
MORE BRUIN
Servite linebacker Austin Niklas (6-2, 230) took an official trip to Montana State over the weekend but also was visited last week at school by UCLA.
PULLMAN PULL
El Dorado defensive lineman Anthony Laurenzi (6-3, 240), Santa Margarita defensive lineman Logan Harrell (6-3, 265) and Tesoro offensive lineman Tim Hodgdon (6-4, 285) were part of a big recruiting weekend at Washington State.
PERK CITY
Recruiting certainly can be stressful for student-athletes but it also offers perks. Just ask Christian Daniel (6-3, 190) about his weekend.
The Canyon wide receiver/safety took an official recruiting trip to Columbia and experienced New York for the first time.
During his trip, he visited the New York Mercantile Exchange and Ground Zero. He also rode a subway for the first time.
When asked what he liked the most about the subway, Daniel replied, "It's completely different than anything from Anaheim Hills."
