Recruiting files: Ross Williams
A Q&A with the Mission Viejo defensive lineman, who has committed to San Diego State.
Player: Ross Williams
School: Mission Viejo
Position: defensive lineman
Committed to: San Diego State
Recruiting trips he took: San Diego State, Ohio State, UCLA
How was the trip to San Diego State?
"The stadium is not always full, but I just really like going to the games. It’s more like a family environment. The coaching staff is a younger coaching staff."
How was Ohio State?
“Ohio State had great fans there. There were 110,000 people there. It was the Michigan game. I went on their campus. I went around Columbus. I went up into their recruiting room during halftime and after the game. They have nice facilities. I was thinking about (that). My brother was going there. But I didn’t want to go to Ohio. I wanted to be closer to home.”
How was UCLA?
“I haven’t been around the UCLA campus. I didn’t go to UCLA’s junior day because I had already committed. I went to a game and they took us to a tent where they had some food. It wasn’t really anything big.”
Describe what it was like to be recruited:
“The whole process has been fun. When it first starts out you're so excited, every letter you get, every phone call. But after a while, so many coaches kept calling. There’s a time you’re getting 10 calls a night from coaches. After a while you’re annoyed with it. But you’re still thankful. At least they’re calling. It’s a fun experience. You only get to do it once.”
Schools that offered him a scholarship:
Colorado, SDSU San Jose Sate, UCLA
Schools that have shown interest in him:
Ohio State, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon, Oregon State
How are you doing now?
(Williams broke his back in a game halfway through this past season)“I just got my CAT scan on Friday (Jan. 11), and I’m waiting for the doctor to give me a final report. I’m working out a little bit. When the doctor says, You can do whatever, I’ll get back in to my full routine.”
What was San Diego State’s initial reaction to your injury?
“They were on the phone with us that night. They said, Don’t worry about anything. The day I became an Aztec was the best day of my life. I’ve heard of people getting hurt and schools, you know … ”
What is the strength of your commitment?
“Once I committed, I told all the other schools I was committed to SDSU. It’s a strong commitment, I wouldn’t back out.”
What could have changed your mind, if anything?
“Maybe if UCLA had come on stronger earlier, I would have considered them more. But I already had my mind made up with San Diego when UCLA came on.” (Also, his brother, Ryan, transferred from Ohio State to San Diego State after Ross committed.)
