Trabuco Hills 22, Foothill 16: Trabuco Hill’s defense looked suspect in the middle of the field, but they turned stingy when Foothill got in the red zone. In the first quarter, Foothill had the ball first and goal from the 2-yard line and didn’t get any points out of it. The Knights were called for a delay of game and were pushed back to the 6 on second down. Then their kicker, Dane Mitten, missed an easy chip shot.
In the third quarter, the Knights had the ball first and goal from the 5 and got three points. Instead of punching the ball in with Michael Camacho on first down, they handed it off to 300-pound lineman/fullback Ruurd Amelita, who got tripped up and got 1 yard out of it. Then they passed twice, the second was a bad snap, and Chad Miller made a run for the end zone. He went airborne and got stopped about a yard or two short of the TD.
In the fourth quarter it looked like everything was going to come down to one defensive standoff at Foothill’s 40-yard line with Trabuco leading 22-16 and just under three minutes remaining. It was fourth-and-1 for the Mustangs when they drew Foothill’s defense offsides. All Trabuco had to do was run out the clock, but the Knights forced a fumble with under two minutes left in the game at the 1-yard line and recovered by Foothill’s Ian Anderson.
QB Chad Miller threw his fourth interception of the game to end any thoughts of a comeback on the Knights’ first offensive play.
Trabuco Hills running back Matt Wagner was a stud. He had 102 yards on 10 carries, at HALFTIME. He finished with 202 yards and a reception for 45 yards. It was also interesting to see the Mustangs’ quarterback shuffle in the first half, as Cory Brandt and Steeven Keener were switching off. They combined to go 5 of 15 for 56 yards and one interception.
In the second half Brandt went 8-8 for 143 yards and three touchdowns. Every time Trabuco Hills got in the red zone it threw a little post fade pattern to Adam Mooney, who finished the game with 10 catches for 129 yards and three touchdowns. The defensive player of the game was the Mustangs’ Gabe Lemon, who had three interceptions, his third putting the game away.
El Toro 56, Woodbridge 20: Woodbridge simply could not stop El Toro’s offense. The Chargers totaled 533 yards from scrimmage and did not punt. Jai Morris had 211 yards rushing for El Toro and Aaron Grey added 92 yards rushing and 92 yards receiving. The Chargers amassed 376 rushing yards and scored all eight of their touchdowns on the ground.
Warriors quarterback David Ingram played well in defeat, going 11-for-19 for 152 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions.
Huntington Beach 22, Northwood 15: Northwood’s A.J. Gubernick and Andrew Stephenson alternated at quarterbac, with Stephenson used to run bootlegs and draws and Gubernick in to pass. Stephenson finished with 56 yards on 11 carries with two rushing touchdowns and Gubernick threw for 155 yards, completing 11 of 21 passes with one interception. “This is the first time we have been able to do that,” Northwood coach Rick Curtis said. “Andrew has been hurt and last week we had both of them ready to go and then Andrew got sick and couldn’t play. Using both guys is something we will be doing the rest of the way. Andrew had several good runs and made some things happen, offensively, for us. And A.J. threw the ball well.”

| Just to clarify on the Foothill recap. Dane Mitten did not play in the game because of an injury. The only league game played by Dane Mitten was the Huntington Beach game. |
