Postgame Q&A: Mater Dei's Matt Barkley
The junior quarterback discusses the Monarchs' victory over Edison.
Postgame interview with Mater Dei quarterback Matt Barkley after his team’s 42-14 victory against Edison.
Question: You jumped on them in the first quarter. Did you see something early?
Answer: Our game plan was to throw the ball, we did that. We ran the ball. Our defense really stepped up. We were on a roll.
Q: Your coach said you hadn’t been tested yet this season, but Edison is a very good defense in this county.
A: Yeah, they’re very good. We wanted to make a statement tonight, and I think we did. We knew it was going to be more of a challenge than the games we previously had.
Q: Given that, 42 points, were you surprised by that?
A: No. That’s our goal for us. That’s our goal for the season, to average 42 points a game.
Q: But if I told you before the game you’d be up 35-0 at halftime…
A: That wouldn’t surprise me too much.
Q: How do you defend your team?
A: You can’t. We’re too…you can’t. Just say you can’t.
