The Honor Bowl, a high school football showcase put together by The Honor Group, will return with games in Sacramento and San Diego this upcoming season. But one main difference this season is that two county teams will participate.

On Sept. 5, Mission Viejo will take on San Diego section power Oceanside at Oceanside at 8 p.m.

On Sept. 6, Orange Lutheran will face Corona Centennial at Noon at Oceanside.

“I think it’s tremendous,” Lancers coach Chuck Petersen said. “To have the honor to play for the military allows us to continue with our service theme and give back (to the military).”

Along with stiff competition, the games provide exposure to programs, and allows them to prove themselves against some of the state’s best programs.

Petersen, an Air Force graduate, said the game takes on an added meaning for him because of his time in a service academy and how much he’s spent around the military.

For Orange Lutheran, the matchup against the Huskies is one of many tough games prior to Trinity League play.

The Lancers will also face Dominguez of Compton, which went to the CIF-SS Southeast Division playoffs in 2013, Yorba Linda, champions of the Empire League, Long Beach Cabrillo, a PAC-5 playoff participant, and Vista Murrieta, which was runner-up in the Inland Division last season.
