EDITOR'S NOTE

We wanted to have some fun and honor Orange County's tremendous athletes in the process. I think we achieved both of those goals quite easily.

Of course, some voters were a little, ahem, passionate, but there's a certain television show that has thrived on passionate voting for most of the decade. We could have tried to restrict voting, though tech-savvy fans probably wouldn't have had much trouble getting around any measures to slow them.

We now will take the fans' selections and give them a vote in our staff polling to determine the Orange County athletes of the year. The fans certainly gave us some quality choices, and all four finalists are sure to garner support from our staff.

The winners of our vote will be announced at a dinner June 10 that will also honor the Orange County athletes and coaches of the year in all varsity sports (as well as the finalists in the fan voting).

More than 186,000 votes were cast, and we think there were more than two people voting nonstop for the past few days.

So now it's time to announce the fans' choices as the Orange County high school athletes of the year:

Savanna's Dominique Williams and Mater Dei's Melissa Bates.

Congratulations are in order for both fine athletes, as well as runners-up Riley Sullivan of Trabuco Hills and Jamia Reid of Kennedy.

All four of the finalists will be invited to the Orange County Register and ocvarsity.com dinner to honor the athletes and coaches of the year June 10, and we hope to recognize them on the fans' behalf that night.

Again, congratulations to the athletes, and thank you to the fans who showed their support for them.

Now it's time to help select the top teams of the 2007-08 school year. Click here to go to the voting.
