MISSION VIEJO With each victorious effort, Mission Viejo junior James Cameron is validating his claim as the state's best 1,600-meter runner.

Cameron won his individual heat and finished with the top overall time of the day at the CIF Southern Section prelims Saturday at Trabuco Hills High.

“I wanted to run comfortably today and go out for the win,” said Cameron, who finished in a time of 4:14.79. “I've been training real hard this season and it has paid off.”

Cameron, who is the top-ranked 1,600 runner in the state, was in a tight battle with Trabuco Hills senior Scott Blair through the first three laps but found an extra burst over the final lap.

El Toro junior Toby Villalva (4:15.54) won his heat and finished second overall, while Blair (4:16.32) finished third overall.

Senior teammate Riley Sullivan (4:17.11) and Dana Hills junior Tyler Valdes (4:18.06) also qualified, placing seventh and eighth overall.

Later, Sullivan (9:14.63) took control of his 3,200 heat and cruised to top time of the day. Valdes (9:27.08) also qualified for the finals, finishing tied for sixth.

For the second consecutive week, Aliso Niguel senior Michael Andraszczyk (1:53.44) posted a personal record in the 800, finishing with the best overall time of the meet.

“I wanted to come out fast today, which I was able to do,” he said.

Villalva (1:55.29) and Dana Hills senior Rusty Parker (1:56.30) finished third and seventh, respectively, to advance to the finals.

In the 110 hurdles, Mission Viejo sophomore Devalle Pedrogo won his individual heat in a time of 14.43, which was the second best time of the competition.

“My goal was to win my heat and advance to finals,” said Pedrogo, currently ranked fifth in the state. “I'm just trying my hardest to make it as far as I can.”

Five county pole vaulters qualified for the finals, as Marina senior Leon Roach, Dana Hills senior Blake Coscino, San Clemente senior Nick Jennings, and the Fountain Valley duo of senior Blake Mason and junior Jeff Tran each cleared 14 feet.

Esperanza senior Blake Poole (59 feet, 8 1/2 inches) produced the top overall mark in the shot put, while Aliso Niguel junior Chad Seymour (173 feet, 9 inches) finished with the top mark in the discus.
