Mater Dei baseball coach Burt Call enjoys winning, but he enjoyed Tuesday's victory a little less than usual.

The Monarchs advanced with a 7-4 home victory over Capistrano Valley, coached by Bob Zamora, Call's coach when he was a student-athlete at Capistrano Valley in the mid-1980s.

Mater Dei (23-6) will play at Los Alamitos (26-3) in the CIF-SS Division I quarterfinals on Friday. Los Alamitos beat Canyon, 7-6, on Tuesday. Los Alamitos is the home team because it has had fewer playoff home games in the playoffs. When teams that play each other after the first round have had the same number of playoff home games, a coin flip determines the home team.

Capistrano Valley finished 20-9. The Cougars had won 11 in a row.

Mater Dei had a 7-0 lead after five innings. Capistrano Valley scored four runs on two hits in the sixth, as two Cougars were hit by pitches and two others walked.

Junior pitcher Aaron Northcraft, the Monarchs' likely starter Friday, entered in the seventh and pitched a 1-2-3 inning.

The Monarchs scored three runs in the third inning, with Northcraft hitting an RBI double and Brian Fratalli driving in one with a single.

Their four-run fifth included an RBI double by Fratalli and a two-run home run by Derek Campbell.

Call said there is a good and bad side to coaching against Zamora.

“It's fun,” said Call, in his eighth year coaching the Monarchs. “But it's also tough.”

Mater Dei eliminated Capistrano Valley in the 2006 playoffs, too. The Monarchs are 4-2 against Capistrano Valley during Call's tenure at Mater Dei, which began in 2001.
