Beckman baseball coach Kevin Lavalle used lingo from another sport to describe the Patriots baseball team's offense.

“We ran a double-reverse flea-flicker,” he said. And why not? Beckman won by a football-like score, 14-0, Tuesday when it beat Garden Grove in a CIF-Southern Section Division III wild-card game at Beckman.

It was the first baseball playoff game for Beckman (15-11), which will play at Alhambra (22-4) in a first-round game Thursday. Alhambra is the Almont League champion. Beckman is the
No. 3 team from the Pacific Coast League

The Argonauts (12-14) were the No. 3 team from the Garden Grove League. Their starting lineup Tuesday included four sophomores and two juniors.

Brogan Evans drove in four runs and Brady Schwartz knocked in three. Brandon Trinkwon and Riley Yang had two RBIs apiece.

Beckman pitcher Kyle Boudreau made his first start in a month and went four innings. Lavalle saved ace Scott Myers (7-2, 1.24 ERA, 81 strikeouts in 59 innings), who will start against Alhambra.

Offensively, Beckman went on the attack immediately. The Patriots' first three batters got on base. Schwartz drove in two with a single and Evans drove in two with a double, and Beckman had a 4-0 lead.

The Patriots scored eight in the second, with Evans and Yang producing two-run singles and Trinkwon adding an RBI double. That made it 12-0.

“That's when we're at our best,” Lavalle said, “when we're running our offense like that.”

Beckman compiled 16 hits and made no errors. The Patriots have won four of their past five games.

Garden Grove did not get more than one hit in an inning, and only once, in the fifth, did the Argonauts have two runners on base at the same time.
