Final score: Tesoro 66, San Hills Hills 27

The game: Quarterback Devon Modster passed for 390 yards and two TDs and rushed for three more as the host Titans roared past visiting San Juan Hills. The Titans’ prolific offense was supported by a solid defense and a blocked punt returned for a TD as Tesoro turned an anticipated showdown between Modster and San Juan Hills’ quarterback Patrick O’Brien into a one-sided affair.

Key to the game: Defense. Tesoro’s balanced offense with Modster, running back Anthony Battista and receivers Carter Jaenichen, Shane Coleman and Spencer Heinsius were only stopped once, a fumble in the first half. The Titans’ defense pressure O’Brien all night with four sacks and forced a handful of punts in the first half. The Titans led, 42-13, at halftime and forced a running clock in the fourth period.

Players of the game: The Arizona-commit Modster. The senior passed for 390 yards and scored on rushing TDs of 1, 1 and 6 yards. He played aggressively without hesitation, showing his shoulder injury is in the past. O’Brien played well in the loss. It wasn’t his fault San Juan Hills’ defense was shredded. The Nebraska commit passed for 254 yards and also rushed for 71 yards, including a 48-yard TD.

Key stat: Tesoro rolled up 687 yards total offense against the No. 9 team in the county. The Titans rushed for 249, including 139 from Battista and 22 from Modster. The Titans struggled to run the ball against Mission Viejo, so the running game was a promising sign.

They said it: “I think we have a good shot (in the West Valley),” San Juan Hills coach Matt Poston said. “A lot of it is going to be matchups and who we get. We’ll be playing some good teams. … It’s going to be a really competitive thing.”

What it means: Tesoro clinched second place in the South Coast League and likely a No. 3 seed in the West Valley Division behind No. 1 Mission Viejo. San Juan Hills is a strong candidate for an at-large berth but will now face a more challenging first round opponent. Poston believed had San Juan Hills won, the Stallions might have earned the No. 3 seed.
