Newport Harbor athletic director Mike Zimmerman said Monday while on vacation that he has been told by school administration that boys water polo Robert Lynn resigned.

Newport Harbor principal Sean Boulton wasn’t reachable Monday and Lynn declined comment.

Last month just before the state high school championships in Orange County, news surfaced that Lynn was no longer coaching at Newport Beach Water Polo Club, the feeder club for the Newport Harbor high school team.

Lynn’s coaching star was on the rise in the spring of 2011 when Newport Harbor hired him away from Harvard-Westlake of Studio City. Lynn replaced the fired Jason Lynch. Lynn drew strong reviews for his work as an assistant coach for the U.S. men’s Olympic team in 2008 that claimed the silver medal.

In three seasons at Newport Harbor, Lynn guided the Sailors to a pair appearances in the CIF Division 1 semifinals, where they fell to Loyola of Los Angeles (last season) and El Toro (2011). Newport Harbor also captured three Sunset League titles.
