Preston and Malia Valder have accomplished something that is not often seen in high school sports. The brother and sister each won a golf individual championship in the Trinity League in a span of five months.
It all started with Preston Valder when the then Servite senior won the boys tournament at Candlewood Country Club in May before heading off to UCLA. Last week, he posted a 2-under-par 70 for the Bruins at the Bill Cullum Invitational at Wood Ranch Golf Club in Westlake Village.
Right around the same time, his sister, Malia, won the girls golf championship in the Trinity League for Orange Lutheran. She opened the 36-hole event with an 80 on the par-74 North Course at Los Serranos Country Club to tie for fourth in the first round. She followed that with a 2-over-par 76 this past Thursday at Recreation Park in Long Beach which moved her into first.
Valder, who transferred from Rosary, has helped the Lancers become one of the surprise teams in the Trinity League this season. Her nine-hole scoring average is 38.8 and she medaled in eight of the Lancers' 12 matches.
The Lancers finished third in the Trinity League behind Santa Margarita and first-place Mater Dei and will play in the CIF-SS Southern Team Regional on Wednesday on the North Course at Los Serranos Country Club. The top four teams from that tournament will advance to the team championship which will be played Nov. 3 on the River Course at Alisal Golf Course in Solvang
