Veteran Irvine aquatics coach Scott Hinman, a trailblazer for high school girls water polo and an eight-time CIF-SS champion in girls swimming, died Wednesday following a medical incident at Northwood, the Irvine Unified School District confirmed. He was 61.

“There was a medical event, he was transported to a local, area hospital and we just received word that he has passed away,” said Annie Brown, public information officer for the Irvine Unified School District said.

“Our hearts go out to Scott’s family and friends and to the Irivne High School community.”

Brown said Hinman’s medical situation occur ed at the Northwood pool deck but she didn’t know the cause of death. Hinman and Irvine were at Northwood for a Pacific Coast League swim meet.

Hinman was the brains behind the Irvine Southern California Championships in girls water polo, a long-standing tournament that highlighted the regular season.

He also coached Olympic swimmer Amanda Beard in high school along with numerous other standouts such as Courtney Cashion. Irvine won eight consecutive CIF-SS Division 1 girls swimming titles under Hinman, starting in 1997.

He was sidelined late in this past girls water polo season with a back issue. His daughter, Crystal, coached Irvine in the playoffs.
