SATURDAY’S CIF-SS GIRLS WATER POLO FINALS

At Woollett Aquatics Center

DIVISION I

SAN MARCOS (26-5) VS. LAGUNA BEACH (30-0), 5:30 p.m.

Outlook: The top-seeded Breakers are seeking to cap a dominant winter with their third Division 1 title in four seasons. The Breakers last claimed Division 1 in 2015 with an undefeated season, joining Foothill’s 2002-03 champions as the only undefeated squads in Orange County history. But Laguna Beach has been arguably more dominant than its 2015 edition. The Breakers’ smallest margin of victory is five goals and they’ve held opponents to an average of 3.1 goals per match. Laguna Beach is 2-0 against third-seeded San Marcos this season and 10-0 against the Royals ninth-year Coach Ethan Damato. Laguna Beach is paced offensively by Stanford-bound duo of Aria Fischer (team-high 102 goals) and Bella Baldridge (school-record 90 assists) and Cal signee Claire Sonne (61 goals). Fischer, an Olympic gold medalist last summer, has contributed heavily to the team’s unselfish play with 57 assists and is a vocal leader. Goalie Thea Walsh (288 saves) leads an emerging junior class that features Sophie Lucas (50 goals) and Evan Tingler (39 goals). First-time Division 1 finalist San Marcos counters with national team player Paige Hauschild and a deep and fast squad. The USC-bound Hauschild paces the Royals with 84 goals, 27 assists and 65 steals. Michigan-bound Brittany Prentice has netted 30 goals while junior Piper Smith has 27. The Royals handled Corona del Mar, 11-4, in the quarterfinals and led No. 2 seeded Mater Dei by as many as five goals in the semifinals en route to an 11-9 victory.
