Tom Caffrey, a high school football coach for 39 years, died this morning. He was 79.
His son Jon Caffrey, football head coach and athletic director at Sunny Hills, said his father died of a pulmonary embolism. Tom Caffey had heart difficulties in recent years.
Caffrey coached at Whittier Christian for most of his career, and later coached at Heritage Christian and Fairmont Prep in Orange County. He started the Fairmont football program in 1999.
Caffrey coached Whittier Christian to three CIF-Southern Section football championships, in 1979, '83 and '84, and coached the school's baseball team to a CIF-SS title in '87.
Services will be at Whittier Christian's gym Jan. 11 at 1 p.m.
