NO. 5 MATER DEI (8-5) VS. CARSON (11-3)

Where, when: Carson High, Friday, 7 p.m.

TV: Time Warner Cable Channel 101, midnight and Saturday at 10 a.m.

Outlook: Carson beat Mater Dei last year, 14-10, at Santa Ana Stadium and advanced to the CIF-Los Angeles City Section Division 1 championship game, in which the Colts lost to Crenshaw of L.A. The Colts, featuring USC-committed receiver Darreus Rogers, might be better this year, especially with the addition of quarterback Kevin McMahon, who transferred from South Torrance. They are ranked No. 29 in California. Mater Dei, No. 24 in the state, also has a McMahon at quarterback — junior Ryan McMahon, who will take his first varsity snaps in this one. Mater Dei has new players at many positions, but the talent is there.

Winner: Mater Dei
