The Trinity League's football coaches are rivals on the field but they have joined forces a bit this week to help Servite prepare for Saturday's CIF state open division bowl game against De La Salle of Concord.

Servite coach Troy Thomas said he has talked this week to Santa Margarita coach Harry Welch and JSerra coach Jim Hartigan about facing De La Salle (13-0) -- ranked No.1 in the state by Cal-Hi Sports.

And last week, Thomas said the talked to Mater Dei coach Bruce Rollinson about playing Mission Viejo.

"They're good men," Thomas said of the trio of coaches.

Welch certainly knows how to beat De La Salle. In 2006, Welch's Canyon Cowboys of Canyon Country upset nationally No.1-ranked De La Salle, 27-13, in the inaugural CIF State Division 1 bowl game in Carson.

For Welch, it was his last game with Canyon. The next season, he was at St. Margaret's.

In 2005, Hartigan's Clovis West team beat De La Salle, 7-0, in a season opener. And in 2004, Clovis West beat De La Salle, 30-12.
