Western wrestling coach Jaime Flores confirmed that he’s stepping down as coach after 13 years.

Flores, who will remain on campus as teacher, said the decision was made so he can spend more time with his children (ages 4, 5 and 8).

“It was a hard decision,” he said.

Flores helped turn Western into one of the more respectable programs in the county. He said his first team (2002-03 season) had 14 kids.

The Pioneers will be returning a strong nucleus from last year’s team. Western will have nine returning varsity wrestlers from the team that the Empire League title and a pair of CIF medalists.
