Laguna Beach senior water polo player Makenzie Fischer, recently voted CIF Division 1 player of the year for a second consecutive season, said she will defer her enrollment at Stanford until 2016 so she can attempt to make the U.S. Olympic team.

“We just decided recently,” Fischer said of the decision. “I don’t think it was a hard decision to make. Just getting the chance to train with the senior national team is worth taking a year off.

“I think it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

Fischer started playing on the national team in December 2013.

This past high school season, Fischer guided Laguna Beach to an undefeated season and a second consecutive Division 1 crown.
