SATURDAY’S CIF-SS GIRLS WATER POLO FINALS

At Woollett Aquatics Center, Irvine

DIVISION I

FOOTHILL (26-4) VS. LAGUNA BEACH (30-0), 7 p.m.

Outlook: The top-seeded Breakers are seeking to punctuate an undefeated campaign with a second consecutive Division 1 title. The second-seeded Knights are looking to return to their glory days and break through against Laguna Beach, winners of an Orange County-record 51 consecutive games. The Breakers are 4-0 against Foothill by a combined score of 39-17. Laguna Beach won the first and fourth matches, 13-3, and, 11-4, respectively, but the middle games were closer, 6-5, and, 9-5. Foothill is the only team to play a full-strength Laguna Beach to a one-goal game this winter. The Knights also are the last team to beat the Breakers. U.S. national team player and Stanford signee Makenzie Fischer leads Laguna Beach in goals (135) and steals (59) and ranks third in assists (42). Her sophomore sister, Aria, continues to improve and has 88 goals and 44 assists. Left-hander attacker Bella Baldridge (team-high 78 assists) and goalie Holly Parker (203 saves) are other players to watch. Laguna Beach features a high-powered attack but defense might arguably be its strength. Foothill’s offense has been balanced. UC Irvine signee Cana Manzella (40 goals) is a strong presence at 2 meters but freshman center Noelle Wijnbelt (42 goals) also has emerged while Julia Sellers (team-high 64 goals) leads a group of swift attackers. Goalie Kenzie Snyder (212 saves) can spark the counter with long outlet passes. Six-time Division 1 champion Foothill last captured a title in 2007.
