Esperanza football coach Gary Bowers has resigned after three seasons to pursue other opportunities, Aztecs athletic director Matt Slevcove said Wednesday.

Esperanza finished 1-9 last season, which included forfeiting early-season victories against Irvine and Bellflower. The Aztecs also lost two other games in overtime and finished 0-3 in the tough Crestview League.

Esperanza finished 4-6 and missed the playoffs in 2014 and were 4-6 in 2013, the final season of the old Century League.

Bowers replaced Greg Kemp for the 2013 season. He teachers special education at Esperanza.

The school is offering a teaching position with its new football opening and plans to post the job at edjoin.org, Slevcove said.

“(It’s) huge that we can hire a teacher (with this position),” Slevcove said.

Esperanza joins Santa Margarita, Los Alamitos and Laguna Hills with coaching vacancies.
