Esperanza High is investigating allegations that racial slurs were directed by Esperanza students toward Foothill boys basketball player Reed Nakakihara during a game Friday night at Esperanza.

Chants of “Jackie Chan” and “chicken fried rice” were said to have been come from the Esperanza student section and directed at Nakakihara, who is of Asian background.

Esperanza principal Dr. Ken Fox said the school was looking into matter Monday and would announce its conclusion Tuesday.

“This is unacceptable and we’re embarassed,” Fox said Monday.

Earlier in January, Foothill issued an apology to Tustin High students and parents for the action of one or two students who held up a sign with a deragatory Spanish slur on it during a Tustin-Foothill boys basketball game.
