It’s often said that teams are reflections of their coaches. That certainly seems true with Edison’s gritty boys water polo team, which is part of a two-game league playoff in the Sunset today starting at 4 p.m. (updated time).

The Chargers upset No. 9 Los Alamitos on Wednesday for the first time since 2002 to force a three-way tie for second place with the Griffins and Sailors while their coach, Diggy Riley, is pacing the pool deck and also helping take care of his wife, Sally, who is battling skin cancer in her lower back.

Riley and Edison both showed plenty of resolve Wednesday night.

“My whole family lives with cancer every day … we’re all dealing with it,”  Riley said. “But for right now, (Sally) is with her chemo pills and it’s really working and it’s got her feeling better. … She wants me out here.”

Edison takes on Los Al again today at 4 p.m. for second place. The loser takes on Newport Harbor for thrid place 45 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
