El Dorado went 0-10 on the field and, because of a forfeit win, takes a 1-9 record into the CIF-Southern Section’s Southern Divsiion playoffs. El Dorado did apply for, and got, one of the division’s two at-large berths (Canyon, like El Dorado a North Hills League team, got the other).

El Dorado coach Zack La Monda had no qualms about applying for at-large berth consideration. Sometimes, a coach won’t apply because he believes his team is undeserving. Estancia coach Mike Bargas, for example, said he would not apply for an at-large berth if Estancia did not beat Saddleback last week to finish third in the Orange Coast League (Saddleback won).

“My job is make sure the kids have a chance,” La Monda said, “whether it’s what’s happening on the field or what’s happening off the field.”

La Monda was heartened that El Dorado played what he called its best half of football this past Friday in the Golden Hawks’ 19-13 loss to El Modena.
