Two great men on the Orange County high school sports scene died in recent days.

Frank Ciarelli. He was the father of two of the county’s great coaches, Tony (Newport Harbor football and track and field — and a throws master) and Rocky (Huntington Beach volleyball, and elsewhere). Frank had a bunch of grandchildren who were outstanding athletes. He played on the 1946 HB football team that won the Sunset League title. And he coached the Orange Lionettes softball team, which was a national power. (I saw that team as a kid at Hart Park, in the 1960s, and it was a big deal back then.)

Frank was also a Waterman — bodyboarder, body surfer, surfer. A memorial service is Oct. 4 at 5 p.m. at the pier in HB. Wear a lei.

Doc Scudday. His son Brian coached here and there. Doc was at a zillion high school basketball and football games. Doc loved watching the kids compete. He always had some quality insight to offer about teams and players.

The services for Doc Scudday will be Saturday at 10 am. at Santa Ana First Church of the Nazarene, on 17th Street. There might be a Servite lapel pin seen at that one, although Doc went to games of all sorts of schools.
