Orange County teams were seeded 1-2-3-4 in Division 1 In order: 1. JSerra, 2. El Toro, 3. Orange Lutheran, 4. Cypress. And that’s what the Orange County top 10 will look like today, too … those four teams in that order at the top of the Register/OC Varsity media poll.

A good Orange County team vs. Orange County matchup is in the first round. Tustin, the No. 2 team from the Empire League, is at Crestview League No. 1 Esperanza.

Three county teams play Division 1 wild card-round games Wednesday. Dana Hills is at Great Oak of Temecula, Edison is home against Long Beach Poly and Kennedy is at Riverside Poly. Dana, Edison and Kennedy are No. 3 teams from their leagues.

The Dana-Great Oak winner plays at JSerra in the Division 1 first round Friday. The LB Poly-Edison winner is at Cypress on Friday. The Kennedy-Riverside Poly is at El Toro on Friday. So more Orange County vs. Orange County team matchups could be on the way.

Huntington Beach, which was No. 1 in some preseason national rankings, finished second in the Sunset League and got a first-round away game. Sometimes No. 2 teams like Huntington play first-round away games. It’s rare, though, that a No. 2 plays at a No. 1. Huntington plays at Big VIII League No. 1 Santiago of Corona in the Division 1 first round Friday.

Aliso Niguel and Marina got first-round home games. Aliso, No. 2 in the excellent South Coast League, is home against Vista Murrieta, historically a good baseball program, and Sunset League champ Marina is home against Corona.
