Water polo: Details emerge in death of Jon Walters

OCVARSITY.COM

An official cause of death has not been released for former Mater Dei water polo standout Jon Walters, 19, but some new details surfaced Thursday.

The USC freshman was brought unresponsive to Chapman Medical Center in Orange on Jan. 1, according to Lt. Jeff Hallock of the O.C. Sheriff's Department.

Walters was transferred a few days later to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, where he remained until he died Wednesday, Hallock said.

The death of the former Register player of the year and U.S. junior national team center has rocked the water polo community. His father, Bill, said Wednesday night that his son died of a heart attack.

Update: Coroner to investigate Walters' cause of death
