The method by which CIF baseball pitchers’ workload is limited will be by pitch count starting with the 2017 season.

The National Federation of State High School Associations, which established nationwide rules that the CIF State and CIF-Southern Section organizations largely follow, for this coming school year has established that the number of pitches thrown in a game will replace innings pitched as the restriction.

CIF pitchers statewide have been allowed a maximum of 30 outs a week under a long-standing rule.

The National Federation left it to state associations to determine pitch-count policy. CIF-SS spokesman Thom Simmons said a policy is expected to be presented to the commissioners of the CIF’s 10 sections in September. CIF State and Southern Section councils will get a first look at the proposed policy in October and then would vote on a final policy at council meetings in January; passage of the policy would place it into effect for the ’17 season.
