Teams put focus back on league
Baseball notes: There are several matchups this week that will be pivotal to races.
Tournament time finally ended this past weekend. Now, it's nothing but league games for most teams, except for the odd nonleague game here or there, until the playoffs start May 13.
This week's schedule has several home-away, two-game series that will do a lot to determine league champions and playoff berths.
In the Freeway League, Sonora and Fullerton are tied for first. They play at Fullerton on Wednesday in the first of their two-game series. Sonora and Fullerton finished 1-2, respectively, last year.
In the Orange League, Savanna and Anaheim are battling for first, as expected. Savanna is 7-0 in league and Anaheim is 6-1 as they start their two-game series Wednesday with a 7 p.m. game at Glover Stadium.
In the South Coast League, league-leading Tesoro plays two against Capistrano Valley, starting with a Tesoro home game Wednesday. Tesoro, with a two-game lead over second-place Aliso Niguel, can further assert its position with a sweep of Capo Valley, which is 3-4 in league after getting swept by Dana Hills last week. Capistrano Valley, like El Dorado in the Century, is rarely in this position of seeing three or four teams ahead of itself in the standings.
AROUND O.C. NOTES
El Modena senior outfielder Jordan Foreman drove in two runs in one game and had an RBI in another as the Vanguards sweept Tustin last week. … Spencer Kuehn of Dana Hills, a junior pitcher-first baseman, had three hits including a home run in the Dolphins' 9-3 victory over Capistrano Valley on Wednesday, then pitched a four-hitter in their 5-0 victory over the Cougars on Friday. … Sonora went 3-1 in the Northview Tournament last week. … Santa Ana went 4-0 in the Falcon Classic/Santa Ana Elks Tournament to win that tournament.
