Veteran San Clemente boys water polo coach Marc Parker, who helped keep the Tritons among Orange County’s best teams for several years, has resigned to spend more time with his family, he confirmed Monday.

Parker took the reins of the Tritons‘ prorgram in 1996 — replacing consistent winner Steve Yancey — and enjoyed instant success to kickoff his 20-year tenure.

San Clemente reached the Division 1 semifinals in Parker’s first season, falling to Foothill, 9-5.

In 1997, San Clemente upset top-ranked Foothill at the South Coast Tournament and moved to No. 1 in the county.

The following season, San Clemente reached another Division 1 semifinals but fell to eventual champion Long Beach Wilson, 14-7.

The Tritons also lost to the Bruins, 9-8, in the 2001 Division 1 semifinals. They reached the quarterfinals in 2002 and 2003.

Long Beach Wilson captured Division 1 nine of 10 seasons from 1996 through 2005, overshadowing the successes of some county programs such as San Clemente.

The Tritons reached the Division 2 quarterfinals in 2014. They finished with three league titles under Parker and won the South Coast Tournament in 2000.
