The CIF-Southern Section today released its representatives in the boys and girls basketball CIF Southern California Regionals, which is the qualifying tournament for the state championships. The Regionals, which have six divisions, begin what is called the state tournament.

No surprises on this list. The teams that were in the CIF-SS Open Division playoff bracket were automatically seeded into the Regionals. Also, teams that advanced to their CIF-SS divisional finals automatically qulified for the Regionals.

Which teams are in which divisions will be announced later. For certain, Mater Dei will be in the Regionals Open Division. That was easy to figure, because the four CIF-SS Open Division semifinalists — Bishop Montgomery, Chino Hills, Mater Dei and Sierra Canyon — are designated as the CIF-SS’s four representatives in the Regionals Open Division.

Esperanza, JSerra and Santa Margarita played in the CIF-SS Open Division. Santa Margarita will be in Regionals Division 1. JSerra and Esperanza could be in Regionals Division 1 or 2. Capistrano Valley and Villa Park will be in Regionals Division 3. Pacifica Christian will be in Regionals Division 5.

O.C. qualifers for the CIF Southern California Regionals: Capistrano Valley; Esperanza; JSerra; Mater Dei; Pacifica Christian; Santa Margarita; and Villa Park.

Regionals brackets and first-round pairings will be available at ocvarsity.com upon release Sunday.
