Two Orange County high school athletes – Newport Harbor’s Emily Bacon and Aliso Niguel’s Emma Reed – have been selected by the CIF-Southern Section to receive its Champions for Character Award.

The CIF-SS selects the winners for their “fierce competitive nature” and for “trustworthiness, responsibility, respect, fairness, caring and citizenship.”

Also selected from O.C. were four coaches (Kelle Bond, volleyball, Capistrano Valley Christian; Aaron Flowers, football, San Juan Hills; Scott Larsen, soccer, Calvary Chapel; Ed Prange, basketball, Loara) and three administrators (Michael Gerakos, activities director, University; Kirk Kennedy, principal, Fountain Valley; David Martinez, assistant principal, Estancia).

The Commissioner’s Award selections included Kimberley Fricker (Canyon principal), John Hansen (Los Alamitos trainer) and Holli Jackson (Edison trainer).

The awards will be presented during a dinner on Sept. 28 at The Grand in Long Beach.

“It is inspiring to read the incredible accomplishments of our honorees,” CIF-SS Commissioner of Athletics Rob Wigod said in a statement. “We are proud and honored to highlight these outstanding individuals and institutions. They personify our commitment to Victory with Honor.”
