Capistrano Valley All-County distance swimmer Nick Norman has committed to reigning NCAA champion Cal, Cougars boys swim coach Steve Yancey said Wednesday.

Norman captured the CIF Divisioin 1 title in the 500-yard freestyle in May with a time of 4 minutes, 23.02 seconds. He went on to qualify in the summer for the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Hawaii in the 1,500-meter freestyle.

Norman placed fifth in the 800 and ninth in the 1,500 in Hawaii.

The senior is the second member of the Mission Viejo Nadadores to commit to Cal in recent days, joining Santa Margarita’s Katie McLaughlin.

Norman also will join for former Nadadores standout Janardan Burns at Cal. Burns had a strong summer and could be headed to the World University Games. The sophomore-to-be from Aliso Niguel placed fifth in the 800, sixth in the 1,500 and 10th in the 400 free at the Phillips 66 National Championships.
