Santa Margarita and Mission Viejo Nadadores standout Katie McLaughlin, the Register’s reigning female swimmer of the year and female athlete of the year, has committed to Cal, she announced on Twitter on Sunday night.

“Committed to Cal!!” McLaughlin wrote on Twitter before posting blue and gold hearts in Cal’s colors and a bear graphic.

She visited Cal over the weekend.

“I chose Cal after visiting the school and meeting the team,” she said. “It just felt like home and I knew it was where I wanted to be! Go Bears!”

McLaughlin set the national high school record in the 100-yard butterfly in May to highlight her season with Division 1 champion Santa Margarita and then finished second in the 200-meter butterfly at the Phillips 66 Nationals in Irvine.

She then claimed the bronze medal in the 200 butterfly at the Pan Pacific Championships in Australia and claimed a spot on the U.S. team for next summer FINA World Championships in Russia.
