Caffrey resigned as football coach an athletic director at Whittier Christian to become the football coach at Sunny Hills.
He coached Whittier Christian football for six years, during which he compiled a 40-29 record. The Heralds reached the CIF-Southern Section Division XIII semifinals in the 2005 and '06 seasons. Whittier Christian was 4-6 overall and 1-3 in the Olympic League in '08.
He replaces Marcelo Giuliano at Sunny Hills, where Giuliano went 6-5 overall and finished third in the Freeway League in ‘08. Giuliano left Sunny Hills to accept the football head coaching position at Pacifica.
Caffrey is a brother of La Habra baseball coach Paul Caffrey. Their father, Tom Caffrey, was head coach at Whittier Christian and other Southern California schools during a long coaching career.
“I had no desire to leave Whittier Christian,” Jon Caffrey said. “But this was an opportunity I couldn't pass up, an opportunity to go into that league and play those schools.”
Jon said he tried to get Paul to become offensive coordinator at Sunny Hills, but Paul did not like the idea of coaching at one school in the fall and at another in the spring. (Trying to get your younger brother in trouble, eh, Jon?)
