The former coach for recent Mater Dei basketball transfer Bol Bol said Friday that a recent comment he made about the player’s grades was false.

Rick Zych, who coached the 7-foot-1 Bol at Bishop Miege High in Shawnee, Kan., had written in an email this month that Bol had “all F’s” when he left Bishop Miege in the fall. That statement was included in a Register story detailing Bol’s chances of being declared eligible to play at Mater Dei this season.

In his email Friday, Zych wrote “I hereby retract my statement communicated to you by e-mail on or about January 4, 2017 that Bol left Bishop Miege ‘with all F’s.’ The statement that Bol had ‘all F’s’ at the time of his withdrawal from Bishop Miege is not true.”

Bol, a junior, is considered one of the top players in the nation for his class.

A student-athlete’s academic standing at his or her’s previous school is examined by the CIF-Southern Section office as it prepares to rule on a transfer’s eligibility at the new school.
