Fifth-year St. Margaret’s football coach Rod Baltau has resigned for medical reasons, Athletic Director Susie Maga said in an e-mail to parents Monday night.

Baltau had been on paid medical leave with back and spine issues, he said last month.

As you know, Rod Baltau has been on medical leave since the beginning of the school year. He has informed us of his resignation from the school for medical reasons effective immediately. We wish him all the best,” Maga wrote to the parents.

Steve Barbee will be the Tartans’ interim coach the rest of the season, Maga said in the e-mail.

St. Margaret’s (6-0, 1-0) is one of four undefeated teams in the county and is ranked No. 1 in the East Valley Division. The Tartans finished last season as CIF runner-ups in the East Valley Division.

St. Margaret’s plays host to Brethren Christian (5-1, 1-0) on Friday in a game that could decide the Academy League title.

Maga didn’t immediately return a message Tuesday.

Baltau’s record at St. Margaret’s entering the season was 40-11 with four Academy League titles.
