Trabuco Hills standout linebacker Griffin Balmer (6-1, 215) has transferred to Mission Viejo and been cleared by the CIF-Southern Section to compete for the Diablos.
The senior had his hardship transfer approved by the Southern Section on Friday, said Thom Simmons, the section's director of communications.
Last season, Balmer was the Sea View League's defensive player of the year. He also was selected first-team All-Southwest Division for the Mustangs, who finished as the division runner-up to La Habra.
Mission Viejo coach Bob Johnson said Balmer could play either linebacker or defensive line. The coach said Balmer is in contention to start.
"He's excited and we're excited to have him," Johnson said.
Mission Viejo's defense also has been bolstered with the addition of St. Margaret's transfer linebacker Michael Schmall.
The Diablos will be anchored by linebacker and USC commit Tre Madden, who covers the middle of the field.
