Servite senior offensive lineman Clayton Johnston announced his commitment to USC on Wednesday at Servite.

“I picked (USC) not only for the football aspect, but also for the academics and the connections past football,” Johnston said.”I belive that USC will be the best fit for me.”

The 6-foot-6, 280-pound Johnston is rated as a three-star prospect by Rivals, Scout and ESPN.

Johnston’s commitment also keeps the Servite-to-USC offensive linemen connection, which was strengthened by the Kalil brothers, Ryan and Matt, alive and well.

“I talked to Frank Kalil, he’s their dad and one of our coaches,” Johnston said. “He just told me about all the great opportunities SC can give me, and that definitely played a role into it.”

Friars coach A.J. Gass said Johnston has shown growth physically, mentally and emotionally over the past six months. The improvement was spurred on by Johnston not getting much attention from colleges prior to his junior season.

“I didn’t have any offers junior year, and that was my motivation,” Johnston said. “That got me through the season, that made me work harder.”

Added Gass: “He had a really good year last year, but I don’t believe he was our best offensive lineman last year. I think he felt that, and that was one of those things he talked about. He wants to be the best guy.

“He’s going to do some great things out there at (USC) as long as he keeps progressing the way he’s doing right now.”

With the commitment of quarterback Travis Waller to Oregon on Tuesday, the Friars now have two players going to two of the premier college football programs on the West Coast.

Long snapper AJ Carty has also committed to Washington.
