    Girls wrestling: Valencia's Gabby Garcia finalist for national award

    Valencia’s four-time state champion Gabby Garcia is a finalist for the Tricia Saunders High School Excellence Award.

    The award, which was first awarded in 2014, is named after Saunders, who was a four-time World Champion and women’s wrestling pioneer. She was the first woman inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and she’s a member of the United World Wrestling Hall of Fame.

    Boys basketball: Laguna Hills hires coach

    Laguna Hills today announced David Yates is the school's new varsity boys basketball head coach. Yates was varsity girls basketball head coach at Mission Viejo the past two seasons. He was a varsity boys basketball assistant coach at Mission Viejo for the seven prior seasons.

    Laguna Hills this past season was 4-19 overall. The Hawks finished fifth in the five-team Sea View League with a 0-8 league record.

    Bowman takes over as Crean Lutheran football coach

    Matt Bowman was named head coach of the Crean Lutheran football team on Thursday.

    Bowman has been an assistant coach in the program since 2009, and he served as the school's defensive coordinator since 2012. He replaces Bruce Mertens, who resigned in February.

    Football recruiting: Mission Viejo's Osborne adds offer from Arizona State

    Mission Viejo All-County wide receiver Austin Osborne has been offered by Arizona State, the rising sophomore announced on Twitter.

    Osborne also has been offered recently by Louisville and Michigan.

    He was a first-team All-County pick last season.

    Boys lacrosse: City of Irvine Championship set for Saturday

    Saturday is annual City of Irvine Lacrosse Championship event, taking place at Irvine High. Play begins at 7:30 a.m.

    The day is a fundraiser for the high school programs and a good way to promote the sport in the city.

    The first city championship took place in 2008.

    Admission: $5 for adults; $3 for students; 14 and under are free

    Boys water polo: Huntington Beach's Wojciechowski, Hurst commit to Cal

    All-County water polo player Ethan Wojciechowski of Huntington Beach and fellow junior teammate Ryan Hurst have committed to Cal, Oilers boys coach Sasa Branisavljevic confirmed Wednesday.

    Wojciechowski was a first-team All-County selection last season and is one of the top aquatics athletes in the county. He also is a standout swimmer. He played utility for the Oilers and helped the squad reach the CIF-SS Division 1 semifinals for a second consecutive season.

    Three water polo players among large Marina signing class

    Three boys water polo players at Marina were among a large group of college signees honored by the Sunset League school Tuesday.

    Water polo players Luka Karaman (USC), Boris Posavec (St. Francis) and Luigi Paparella (Wagner) have each signed with four-year schools, Vikings coach Tony Karaman reports.
