Boys water polo: Foothill reaches semifinals in NorCal

    Foothill's boys water polo team won twice Friday to reach the semifinals of the Memorial Cup in San Jose.

    The Knights, ranked No. 1 in Division 2, will take on Coronado in the semifinals Saturday at Bellarmine Prep at 11:20 a.m. after defeating Miramonte, 13-7, and San Ramon Valley, 18-8.

    In the other semifinals, Sacred Heart Prep takes on The Bishop's of La Jolla at 12:30 p.m.

    OCVarsity Hot 150: Studs, snubs after Week 8

    With the regular season quickly winding down, it's time for another review of the Register's annual Hot 150 list of football players to watch.

    The "studs" are ranked players who are having great seasons and the "snubs" are players exceeding my expectations or who I ranked too low on my list or perhaps not at all.

    Los Al's Johnson in All-American game

    Los Alamitos punter/linebacker Blake Johnson will officially be selected to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl Game in a ceremony at Los Alamitos High next Friday.

    The game is Jan. 3 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Tx. It will be televised live by NBC.

    Johnson is regarded as one of the top punters in the nation. He also is an outstanding linebacker for the Griffins.

    Girls tennis roundup: Woodbridge's Hazel captures PCL singles title

    Here are some highlights from the girls tennis league finals played Thursday:

    In the Pacific Coast League:

    Woodbridge senior Stephanie Hazel captured the single crown in the PCL final on Thursday, topping Corona del Mar freshman Danielle Willson, 8-1.

    University's tandem of Celine Gruaz and Yuki Asami powered through the doubles final, overwhelming CdM's Riley Gerdau and Siena Sharf, 8-0, to claim the title.

    Foothill makes cut at CIF-SS Northern Team Regional

    Foothill junior Madie Chou posted a 4-under-par 68 on Thursday at Soule Park Golf Course in Ojia to help the Knights post a 413, tying them for third in the CIF-SS Northern Team Regional with Marlborough. 

    Foothill got the third and final transfer spot into the Nov. 6 WSCGA So Cal Championship qualifier after Marlborough's sixth player got disqaulified.

    Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks won the tournament with a 390 while Oaks Christian carded a 401 to finish second.

    Beckman wins first CIF-SS regional championship

    COSTA MESA - After putting one some oversized gray CIF T-shirts and decorating their faces with streaks of red lipstick, six Beckman girls golfers headed to the first tee at Costa Mesa Country Club to begin a celebration that they never anticipated having.

    While off to the side, no more than 30 feet away, Mater Dei’s golf team huddled around each other, wiping away tears after its season came to an abrupt, unexpected end.

    Boys volleyball: Dana Hills captures beach championship

    The Dana Hills boys beach team defeated Palos Verdes, Redondo and Mira Costa for the Southern Pacific Interscholastic Beach Volleyball Championship, Oct. 11 at Annenberg Beach in Santa Monica.

    The Dolphins went 8-0 in the Orange Division.

    Each school has three teams of two players and each team must win two of three sets for a victory.  

    After victories over Palos Verdes and Redondo, the Dolphins advanced to the finals. In the finals, Dana’s 3rd team won both their games.  The second team ...

    Girls volleyball: Weekend tournaments on tap

    There are a pair of tournaments this weekend that will serve as one final test before teams head into the CIF-SS playoffs.

    Redondo Varsity Classic will take place at Redondo, West Torrance and South Torrance Highs.

    The top seeds are 1. Redondo; 2. Marymount; 3. Chino Hills; 4. Valencia; 5. Long Beach Poly; 6. Rancho Cucamonga; 7. San Clemente; 8. Scripps Ranch
