Football recruiting: Three O.C. players commit to Pac-12 schools

    Foothill defensive lineman Chris Yaghi, San Clemente tight end Cole Fotheringham and Orange Lutheran offensive lineman Logan Bathke -- three of Orange County's top recruits in the class of 2016 -- have committed to Pac-12 schools.

    Yaghi (6-4, 275) confirmed that he has committed to Cal while Fotheringham (6-4, 235) committed to Utah, Tritons football coach Jaime Ortiz announced. Bathke announced recently on Twitter that he committed to Oregon.

    Brea Olinda shuts out Valencia to win summer league title

    FULLERTON – With eight minutes to go on Monday at Sunny Hills High, Brea Olinda’s one-goal lead suddenly seemed to be in serious jeopardy.

    The Wildcats committed a handball in the box, and Charlie Zuniga was getting ready to take a penalty kick for Valencia.

    Zuniga lined a shot toward the right post, but Sean O’Brien guessed right for the Wildcats and got his fingertips on the ball to deflect it back onto the field.

    The shutout was preserved.

    Boys volleyball: County players of the year selected for Pan-Am Games

    Two-time Register boys volleyball player of year TJ DeFalco (Huntington Beach HS) was selected to the 12-man U.S. roster for the upcoming Pan American Games.

    The U.S. will compete in Pool B with Canada Mexico and Puerto Rico.

    Pool A consists of Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Cuba.

    The U.S. will open play against Puerto Rico, July 17, followed by Mexico (July 19) and Canada (July 21).

    DeFalco isn’t the only former county player of the year on the roster.

    Edison’s 7-on-7 Battle at the Beach passing tournament is set for Saturday, July 11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

    Chargers coach Dave White finalized and released the tourney's brackets on Thursday for what's annually regarded as one of the area’s top preseason showcases.

    Football recruiting: Edison's White commits Ivy League contender

    Edison senior-to-be wide receiver Garrett White (6-2, 200) has committed to Yale, said his father, Edison football coach Dave White.

    White recently received offers from Yale, Penn and Columbia.

    Last season, White had 39 receptions for 510 yards and five TDs.

    Football: North adds Mater Dei's Nickerson

    The North has added Mater Dei linebacker Ronald Nickerson (5-10, 210) to its roster for next week's Brea Lions Orange County All-Star Game, North coach Mike Enright of Rancho Alamitos announced.

    The game is July 9 at Orange Coast College at 7:15 p.m.

    Nickerson replaces Esperanza running back Brett Mullins (shoulder).

    Fullerton in unusual place in Sunny Hills Summer League

    FULLERTON – Fullerton boys soccer coach George Shumaker has rarely been in a position such as this before so he thought the Indians’ time in the Sunny Hills Summer League was over.

    With Thursday and Friday both serving as off days because of the upcoming holiday weekend, the South squad suited up in helmet and pads Wednesday morning at Capistrano Valley High for its first full-contact practice in preparation for next Thursday’s Orange County All-Star game at Orange Coast College.

    Three county golfers make Wyndham Cup roster

    Recent Tesoro graduate Gordon Neale, Woodbridge senior-to-be Hide Yoshihara and Corona del Mar junior-to-be Alyaa Abdulghany have been selected to the West Team's roster that will compete in the 26th annual Wyndham Cup at Old Town Club in Winston-Salem, N.C, July 27-30.

    For the past 25 years, the tournament brings together 40 of the top junior golfers in the country to compete in a match-play tournament which uses five different formats - four-ball, mixed four-ball, foursomes, mixed foursomes and singles.
