    Sunny Hills' defense shines in a summer league win over Sonora

    FULLERTON – This has been a strange summer for Sunny Hills boys soccer coach Mike Schade.

    Normally, the Lancer smother their opponents with an unrelenting, well-organized defense.

    But for some reason, Schade said, the Lancers haven’t bought into the system just yet, and through eight summer league games, Sunny Hills has only posted two shutouts, the most recent coming on Monday when the Lancers beat Sonora, 1-0.

    Rosary's Tice takes AD job, remains softball coach

    Tom Tice has accepted the athletic director position at Rosary High School and will continue serving as the school’s head softball coach, he confirmed Monday afternoon.

    Because Rosary belongs to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange, Tice is able to serve as both head of the athletic department in addition to keeping his duties as the school’s softball coach.

    Football: North roster moves

    North coach Mike Enright of Rancho Alamitos has made a few roster moves recently for the Brea Lions Orange County All-Star Game on July 9.

    The Vaqueros' football coach has added his defensive back, Matt Finona (5-11, 175), Western linebacker Nick Zarate (6-1, 210), Cypress offensive lineman Jacob Bakuwel (6-2, 240), Cypress linebacker Logan Burt (5-8, 185) and Westminster defensive lineman Steven Vu (5-11, 202).

    Football recruiting: San Clemente QB, Villa Park WR land offers

    San Clemente junior-to-be quarterback Jack Sears (6-3, 190) has been offered by Utah, Tritons football coach Jaime Ortiz announced Saturday.

    Ortiz said Sears -- who flashed his potential last season as a brief backup to Sam Darnold in the CIF Southwest final -- received the offer at a satellite camp on Saturday. Utah is the first school to offer Sears.

    Utah currently features former San Clemente quarterback Travis Wilson and holds a commitment from offensive lineman class of 2016 lineman Tucker Scott of San Clemente.

    Football: Los Alamitos captures Orange Coast College passing tourney

    Los Alamitos went 5-0 to capture the inaugural Orange Coast College passing tournament on Friday.

    The Griffins defeated Mater Dei, 20-19, and, 25-20, en route to the title of the eight-school event.

    The field also included Santa Margarita, JSerra, Fountain Valley and Sonora among others. The Griffins defeated JSerra, 14-0.

    Santa Margarita loses RB, Buena Park adds top WR

    The transfer winds whipping around Orange County football have produced two more noteworthy player moves.

    Santa Margarita running back Dre Hall has enrolled at Moreno Valley and rising Yorba Linda wide receiver Jeremiah Hawkins has enrolled at Buena Park, coaches at the players' new schools confirmed Wednesday.

    El Toro's Frith takes AD job, resigns as football coach

    Robert Frith has accepted the athletic director position at El Toro and resigned as the school's football coach, school assistant principal Ed Begany confirmed today.

    In the Saddleback Valley Unified School District, to which El Toro belongs, an athletic director cannot simultaneously hold a head coaching position.

    Similarly, Troy Roelen had to relinquish duties as Mission Viejo's basketball coach when he became the school's athletic director in the 2014-15 school year.

    Begany said Frith made the change voluntarily.

    Swim Meet of Champions boasts its largest field

    A blend of U.S. national team members, international Olympians and up-and-coming talent is set to lead almost 1,000 swimmers into this weekend’s TYR Fran Crippen Memorial Swim Meet of Champions in Mission Viejo.

    The four-day meet kicks off Thursday at the Marguerite Recreation Center at 5 p.m. and will boast its largest field, said Coach Bill Rose of the host Mission Viejo Nadadores.

    “We’re looking forward to it, but it’s going to be one big undertaking,” Rose said.

    Water polo: San Juan Hills coach resigns

    San Juan Hills boys and girls water polo coach Dan Newberry has resigned, Newberry and athletic director Armando Gonzalez confirmed Tuesday.

    Newberry was hired as the Stallions' water polo coach before the 2011 boys season.

    Newberry, a former Capistrano Valley assistant, said in a text message that he hasn't resigned from his swim coaching duties at San Juan Hills.
